Fashion Focus
10 fashion resolutions to keep in 2013
1) Clean out your closet

There’s a pile of clothes you’ve never worn because they were a) bought on a whim, b) of sentimental value c) not right for any occasion. If you haven’t worn it in the past six months, gift it to someone who will and earn yourself some good karma (and more closet space).

2) Dress to flatter your shape

Your 2013 resolution is to, finally, get your best body. But until then, don’t dress in denial. Polish up your arsenal of fashion tricks to conceal those love handles and thunder thighs– think peplum waists, palazzos, colour blocking, structured jackets, scooped necklines. Hello, Miss Hourglass

3) Invest in a quality classic

Trend junkies, this one’s for you. Instead of diving headfirst into every new fad you spot, reserve a part of your fashion budget for one long-term love that’ll see you through the seasons. A Shahab Durazi pantsuit perhaps, or that Celine leather tote…

4) Take a fashion risk

Before Marc Jacobs and Miuccia Prada tried it for their Autumn/Winter 2012 presentations, you might have laughed at the thought of wearing a pair of trousers under a skirt. With these style luminaries leading the way, take a definitive step out of your safe zone with head-to-toe-colour, a bold haircut or even just a daring new silhouette. Nobody should accuse you of being boring in 2013.

5) Get over the LBD

Raspberry, emerald, slate and oxblood- there’s a whole Pantone family out there you’ve never even met. Trade your LBD in for a figure-flattering sheath in a bolder colour, and let the compliments flow.

6) Wear your best clothes everyday

We're all guilty of this. Buying another beautiful white shirt that goes into the 'special occasions' pile while you traipse out the door everyday in your tired old jeans-and-tee combo. Since the new you in 2013 promises to look fabulous every day, those clothes are coming out from their museum space.

7) Fall in love with a crazy print

Who says fashion doesn’t have a sense of humour? Quirky prints are the easiest way to shake your wardrobe up, whether you choose to let them dominate a colourful maxi dress or just add an accent with a fun scarf.

8) Make a statement with your accessories

You’ve admired those big, beautiful baubles for so long, now’s the time to get your own. A spiked necklace from Manipur-born Mawi or a super-stacked Pamelo Love ring and you'll be on your way to creating your own heirloom collection.

9) Break your online shopping jinx

The year is 2013, and shoppers no longer wait in lines outside their favourite retail stores. They're buying the latest collections kilometres away from the comfort of their couches. And with all the safety measures guaranteed to keep you from being conned - free shipping, 30-day return policy, elaborate size guides - there's really no excuse to play it old school any more.

10) Be kind to the planet

There's nothing chic about toxic waste destroying the environment. Whether it's supporting the organic clothing movement or swapping plastic for paper bags at the next big sale, we could try a little harder to be more eco-friendly this year.
